What's wrong with my boiler?
We tackle all kinds of boiler faults - here are some of the most common boiler faults and their causes.
But don't forget, the best cure is prevention, so why not treat your boiler to a service before it breaks down?
Fizzing and popping noises usually mean limescale and/or black sludge blocking the boiler's heat exchanger, so it sounds like a kettle boiling.
Your boiler works but there's no hot water or no heating is typically a failure of the motorised valve controlling where water goes from the boiler.
The boiler cuts out after a few seconds often means the pump has failed, so water stays in the boiler, gets too hot and trips the safety cut-out.
Your boiler ignition sequence refuses to start usually means a safety device has failed or has been tripped by another dead component such as the fan or pump.
The pilot light won't stay on usually means a safety device has failed so the gas valve can't open fully.
The boiler and timer/programmer won't work at all then frequently this is just a blown fuse, so check the fuse board/consumer unit and the fused switch for the boiler if you have one.
A smell of gas outside at the flue terminal frequently means the gas valve is letting too much gas through so unburnt gas escapes up the boiler flue.
The fan starts and the ignition clicks but there's no flame in the boiler is typically because the gas valve has failed.
You feel sleepy or dull headed or get flushed cheeks when in the same room as your boiler can mean carbon monoxide is leaking from your boiler - turn it off and call us immediately!
My boiler displays a fault code
When this happens then tell us the fault code in case we need to bring specific parts related to the fault code you have seen.
