Hot Water Cylinders

There are typically three types of hot water cylinder:

Instant Hot Water Cylinders

These cylinders typically use gas or electricity to power instant heating of the water.

They are usually fitted near the tap and tend to be powered by electricity as installing a gas supply can be costly.

Instant water heaters offer the conveninence of hot water in unusual locations (for example, a shop or garage).

Vented Hot Water Cylinders

Vented hot water cylinders typically require a large storage tank in a loft or similar location.

Vented cylinders typically work through the effect of gravity, using the weight of the stored water in the loft to push down water to a vented cylinder and taps on a lower level.

For example, a vented cylinder might have a cold water storage tank with a vented cylinder in a bathroom or airing cupboard and the taps typically fitted in the bathroom and lower floors.

Because the taps rely on the force of gravity from the cold water storage tank the taps might not produce a high volume of water.

To counter this problem pumps can be fitted to force water through at a higher pressure, for example shower pumps or whole house pumps to give extra force or volume to the water.

Megaflos and unvented hot water cylinders

Although Megaflo is a brand name, they are typically recognised as the name for unvented hot water cylinders despite many other manufacturers supplying them.

You can read more about unvented hot water cylinders here.

Usually, if you need hot water from more than one tap at the same time, or on the upper floors of a 2 or 3 storey property, a gravity or vented hot water storage cylinder often just isn't enough without a shower pump or whole house pump.

Even shower pumps can struggle to cope with enough water pressure and flow when faced with more than one shower at a time, especially when someone runs a hot tap elsewhere in the home whilst you're in the shower!

And quite often, traditional vented copper cylinders can't recharge with hot water fast enough when household demand is high.

With typically larger storage capacity and using mains water pressure, an unvented hot water storage cylinder such as a MegaFlo can provide your home with hot water from multiple outlets at the same time and with minimal effects from pressure loss or reductions in flow rate*.

This is because the water runs at mains pressure rather than through gravity, so the volume of water and the force of it is much higher (assuming you have sufficient mains water pressure).

We can advise on Megaflos, unvented cylinders, regular vented cylinders and in boosting mains water pressure when this isn't enough to power multiple taps.
